English for newbies

This thread is created for old-(or maybe young) gamers, which're only making the first steps in studying English. I guess, there are no teachers here (ok, there's one but he's not english teacher), so I guess we should just talk to our "students" and show them all knowledges we've got.

And please, don't show your sense of humor there, students won't appreciate that. Or, even if they do, it's better to make a new thread and have fun there. Not here. Roger that?

Practice makes perfect. Everybody just need to take his\her basic school english and play games. That's how I gained most of my knowledge of language.

And one question: which moovies are better to see to master listening skill. I mean moovies with good, clear english and not very long dialogs. I heard Matrix is good. Anything else?

Apparently it either has it in American English, or there're a lot of fools like me, who think that it has. For example: click. As you may know, McDuck's slogan "I'm lovin' it" has a mistake, "love" cannot be used in continuous form.

Any film with subtitles. For example, a few months ago I've watched Mr. Brooks, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within...

Eraser, how would you say? "Understood?" instead of "Roger that", dummies instead of newbies and plural without form? Consider it's my lame style of writing.

 

"Plural" is fine by me, it wasn't addressed to a newbie anyway.
And yes, US radio code is definitely not a piece of language I'd call "beginner".

Eraser, oh, i see your point I think these words should be familiar for any gamer, but if they are not - we are here to answer questions, I'll try to explain it.

 

Oh, I wish it was so! But the majority of gamers plays freaking "russefekations", often with awful translation, and doesn't care for anything else. "Why should I learn English if Vosem Medvedey provide a brilliant translation for us?" - they ask. Sad but true.

True. I often noticed during conversations that English residents (and US ones) tend to simplify their grammar quite a bit, anyway.
