What to do with the cd.cue file.

Hi, I downloaded the cd copy/ full version of quake 2 and it came with two files: the cd.bin and the cd.cue. I can't extract anything from the cd.cue file, so do I just burn it to a cd?

 

What is CD image and how to use it?

Sometimes we recieve complaints like "I've downloaded the game, and then I've got one single ISO file,what should I do with it?"

Let's make it clear

Files with *.ISO, *.NRG, *.BIN/*.CUE, *.MDF/*.MDS extensions, are CD images. CD image is an extremely exact copy of real CD. Some types of images (mdf+mds, nrg, bin+cue) can even contain CD-audiotracks. This feature may be useful for collectors and for people who are looking for authentic gamplay. The advantage of the CD image is that in most cases the stored game is absolutely complete and you'll have less problems installing it.

How to install the game stored on CD image?

1. Download Nero Burning Rom or another CD writing prog. Then you shold click on "Burn image to disk" and write it to recordable CD. For sure you'll need a special CD-writing drive of correspondent type. As a result you'll obtain a copy of game. You can also use other CD writing tools:
   ImgBurn (BIN, CUE, DI, DVD, GI, IMG, ISO, MDS, NRG and PDI formats)
   InfraRecorder (.iso, .bin/.cue)
2. Download Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120 or another virtual CD emulation program. After lanunching it, you should mount your CD image. The program will reserve some space on your hard drive and will create virtual drive. Your PC will work with this drive as with newly plugged-in CD/DVD-ROM drive. As a result you have game on virtual CD which is stored on your hard drive rather than on real CD.
3. Finally you can unpack the image as a regular archive, but this is not the best solution, because the game may require mounted CD.

How to create CD image?
Almost every CD wrighting program has the option of creating the virtual CD image.This is the way you can make it. But don't forget that not all image formats are able to save audio-CD tracks (see formats list above).

@noddynod443, you can mount one of these files by, for example, Daemon Tools Lite. Then you will have a virtual, but fully working CD in Explorer (if you are using Windows).
