EDIT: I think is some issue with Google translating the text into English a split second after I'm done typing. Can you see any instances of "ares" on the text about the LaserActive, near the end? If you do, then everything is OK.

 

This week has brought us a very unexpected resurrection, the one of ZSNES:

Mind you, this is not the old ZSNES anymore. ZSNES was a fantastic SNES emulator back in the day, but in the last years it has been surpassed by more exact emulators such as Mesen or ares. These days I wouldn't recomend using the old ZSNES at all.

Instead, Super ZSNES is a complete rewrite of the emulator by its original authors, and as such it includes several enhancements. Like the ability to run certain games (like F-Zero, Megaman X or Super Castlevania IV) with ultra-smooth resolution and graphical enhancements.

It's also in an early stage, so don't expect it to run everything, especially the games with extra chips.

 

Mixing in hi-res objects with unnaturally crisp large pixels will make these originally cohesive and tastefully-crafted games look exactly like fugliest indie titles, lol. But I bet this feature was very interesting to program at least.

We're on a forum for old gamers with a ton of retro hardware. This is the only SNES emulator I know of written so well in assembly. No other emulator with such high-quality emulation runs faster on retro hardware.
With it, we didn't realize how resource-intensive the SNES is back then.
So, it certainly has its niche, at least among some geeks.

 

ZSNES was indeed fantastic, but it had a number of glitches that gave the purists nightmares. I didn't mean to throw it under the bus, but I also really wanted to stress that in this day and age there are far better SNES emulators.

It will always have a place in my heart for allowing me to play most SNES games under my first Pentium PC.

As for the visual enhancements, I will probably end up disabling them, but so far they seem to me quite tasteful:
