Hacks / translations for your favorite 8-16-bit console games

LOL Listen to this! They've found hidden 5 player modes in some of the NHL games for the SNES. NHL '95, '96 and '97 to be exact.



It seems code for this feature was already inside the games, but for some reason was disabled before release. We already have patches that, in the author's words...

"After patching, each game supports up to 5 simultaneous human players using SNES multitap-compatible hardware. The team selection screen displays all connected controllers, and all players are fully controllable during gameplay. No additional modifications are required."

The PC-FX game All Japan Women's Pro Wrestling Queen of Queens has received an English translation:

It's a fighting game based on FMV. Not the entirety of the game seems translated, but the authors claim it's fully playable and that they don't plan future versions because of technical limitations in the game and the console.

And for a moment I thought it was the first English translation for the system, but it turns out previous ones exist for Zeroigar, Farland Story FX and Pia Carrot e Youkosou!!

Thanks for the tip, Octohum, I didn't know about that one. And it seems like an interesting game, something on the style of Alone in the Dark or Resident Evil.

Meanwhile, I've learned of a Reigen Doushi / Mr. Vampire (NES) English translation by BlackPaladin:



The game does have a western version called Phantom Fighter, but the original was a license from a Chinese film called Mr. Vampire.

I also should have mentioned the patch comes in two versions, one with quality of life improvements and a vanilla one for those who want to experience the game "as it is", warts and all.

 

Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh for the N64 has received an English translation:

It's an action game with multi-directional scroll.

Music hack for Smash TV (NES). It fixes the music, that originaly stopped after a while. Now it loops as it is supposed to.

And a new hack for Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis (Mega Drive) has appeared, adapting all the campaigns from the PC version.

There's even an optional patch with higher resolution. They don't seem to have a homepage, but you can get it from Youtube.

The Japanese exclusive Segagaga (for the Dreamcast) has been finally translated to English!

It seems the game remained untranslated due to complex technical issues that have finally been solved. The game itself is a tongue in cheek RPG where the player gets to comandeer Sega itself in a desperate fight against its competitors. References to Sega's glorious past and wacky humour are expected.

Today I've seen a hack for Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind (SNES) that promises to make it "less bad".

I don't know if this hate is justified, but it certainly has caught my attention.

Now, if somebody has the guts to fix Darkman (NES), that would make my day. But that one is beyond fixing.

 

Doraemon: Nobita to Yousei no Kuni (SNES) has been translated to English.



It's an action platformer based on the popular manga and TV series.

EDIT: Here's some info on the game I found online. It is pretty interesting:

 

A new patch has appeared for the game Popeye in High Seas High-Jinks (Mega Drive). It is one of the recently dumped exclusive games from the Sega Channel. Anyway, it claims to correct an issue with the sound samples.

The Vintage Velocity hacks by PowerPanda just got updated. They modify F-Zero: Maximum Velocity (GBA) so we can play the original tracks from F-Zero and BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2 (SNES) with the updated engine.

Dragon Warrior IV for the NES just got "delocalized". Confused? Well, it seems that the Translation Quest team has provided a brand new, meticulously crafted English translation of Dragon Quest IV. It is based on a thought-for-thought equivalency, rather than a one-to-one literal rendering of the Japanese. Every effort was made to produce natural, tonally appropriate English. This translation does not indulge in the kinds of needless liberties to be found in the official localizations. The aim is to provide an accurate equivalent of what the Japanese audience experienced.

Several additional tweaks were introduced that address bugs and design flaws, with the goal of delivering the most polished and complete version of the game available.
